It
was Jimmy's scene-stealing performance as the lollipop-sucking
strip club bouncer in Columbia Pictures' GO, directed by Doug
Liman (SWINGERS), that jumpstarted his film career. Since, he
has landed several roles in films such as Jerry Bruckheimer's
"Coyoye Ugly" and Fox Searchlight Pictures' ONE HOUR PHOTO,
starring Robin Williams (scheduled to premiere at the Sundance
Film Festival in January 2002). He has also been seen on numerous
television shows including ER, KING OF QUEENS, RUDE AWAKENINGS,
ANGEL, ONCE AND AGAIN, SECRET SERVICE GUY and YOUTH IN REVOLT.
Jimmy, of course, wants more. Namely, a regular sitcom part,
an HBO comedy special, and a lead role in a film.

SHUBERT "Animal Instincts"
Working in
a sort of comedic short-story form, Shubert hammers at the funny
bone primarily with his observations on wildlife: frogs that secrete
hallucinogens, eagles that copulate in midflight and an unlucky
fish who sees a restaurant serve his friend Larry on a bed of
rice with a side dish of carrots and peas. The dark quality of
Shubert's material is topped only by the passionate intensity
of his delivery. "People know I'm working harder than an ugly
stripper and they respond to that.,' Shubert. says. "I feed off
the energy of the audience. It's not enough to make 'em laugh.
I want to hurt 'em, for their ribs to be sore., wiping the tears
away. It's a great job. If all I ever did in my life was make
people laugh and get paid, that's the best job in the world for
me." |

SHUBERT "Pandemonium"
Jimmy Shubert,
Pandemonium In this whole Red State-Blue State debacle, it seems
lately that the liberal denizens of comedy have been crowding
the stage, but Stand Up! Records is pleased to report that they've
found themselves the voice of the masses in one Jimmy Shubert.
A man's man with a conservative outlook and an utterly pragmatic
sensibility, Shubert is ready to take on all the ACLU wonks and
Green Party members you can throw at him, because he's determined
to come out fighting -- and win. Clearly drawing on a great tradition
of snappy one-liners, Shubert weaves these hilarious outbursts
into occasionally thoughtful, but always raucous stories, holding
his own, riffing on both politics and the battles of every day
life. He easily combines what's great about both the instant gratification
of a punch line and the hilarity of trying to find a way to justify
that punch line, and obviously has the audience in the palm of
his hand while he works them over. If you've ever wanted to hear
someone take on what seems like endless liberal comedic rants,
Jimmy Shubert might just be your best bet. Like a modern day Archie
Bunker, Shubert comes out swinging on his latest CD, "Pandemonium." |

SHUBERT "Alive & Kickin'" DVD/CD Set
In a famous story, a terminally ill comedian is visited by Death, who comforts the performer, pointing out, “Hey, dying is easy. Now comedy… that’s hard!” Well, Jimmy Shubert sure ain’t dead yet. With his new DVD set “Alive & Kickin’,” this one-time “Outlaw of Comedy” and more recent resident of both the small and large screens has put himself behind the camera, directing a cast of his friends and fellow comedians as they eulogize (and eventually try to grave-rob) their dear old friend, Jimmy Shubert.
The star-packed short film is followed by a full hour of Shubert’s stand-up, wherein he brings his modern-day Archie Bunker persona to the masses, and with DVD extras wherein he takes it, literally, to the streets. While his Afghanistan video journal proves that a sleeveless cargo shirt might not to be the look for him, Shubert’s performances, whether done with a tiny PA as fire fighters look on or in a war zone with an audience of grateful soldiers ready for a laugh, are timeless. He combines well-honed material with a relaxed stage presence of a slightly hammy class-clown with an eye for the ridiculous and a barbed tongue. As the middle child of seven brothers and tour mate of Sam Kinison’s, Shubert grew up with some serious defense mechanisms, and if not with his fists, he’s always gonna come out swinging with his wits.
The DVD “Alive & Kickin’,” out now from Stand Up! Records, features a short film with cameos from friends including Gary Valentine (King of Queens, Stuck on You), Billy Gardell (Heist, You, Me, & Dupree), and Joey “Coco” Diaz (Spiderman 2, The Longest Yard, My Name is Earl); a director’s commentary; a video journal from Shubert’s USO trip to Afghanistan; a “One Night in a Comedy Club” featurette; and an audio CD (because watching DVDs while driving is, albeit a fun challenge, still too dangerous. Though, if you’re stuck on the side of the road, Shubie’s probably got a couple of cold ones in the trunk to tide you over…). |
